BAOSTEEL GROUP, Hot Rolled Coil price increase 100RMB/MT and 200RMB/MT within Aug month for new booking.
1.1: In July, private enterprises generally increased their ex-factory prices by 200-300 RMB/ton. In September 2025, the prices for Baosteel, Meisteel, and Winsteel Tin products will increase by 400 RMB/ton based on the August 2025 base price.
1.2: It is expected that a total of nine new tin and chromium plating production lines will be added in 2025, with a total production capacity of 1.85 million tons, with production concentrated in the first half of the year. In addition, 10 production lines for unbuilt projects have been approved, with an estimated production capacity of 2.2 million tons.
2. Hot-Rolled Coils Market
According to market monitoring, the average price of hot-rolled coils in August increased by 150 to 200RMB/ton compared to July.
Overall, the supply side is relatively stable, with plant operations and output within normal ranges and a slight increase in on-site inventories. Steel mills currently have ample orders and long production cycles, making it unlikely that they will accept orders at a price reduction, thus supporting high costs in the short term. On the demand side, the market is traditionally in the off-season, with weak downstream performance and limited room for growth. Overall, the current supply-demand balance is weak, and it is expected that prices will have limited room to bottom out in August. Any short-term price increase will likely be driven by positive factors stimulating speculative demand.
3. Market Information
3.1 The price of raw material tin ingots increased by 3,200RMB/ton, resulting in a similar increase of US$1.5 to US$2/ton for 0.20mm 2.8/2.8 tinplate.
3.2 Tinplate manufacturers’ profits remained stable, with a slight decrease of RMB 25/ton.
3.3 Tinplate Export
In June 2025, China total tinplate exports totaled 132,900 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.40%. From January to June 2025, China total tinplate exports totaled 907,100 tons, a year-on-year increase of 19.24%.
In June 2025, China total TFS exports totaled 42,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 57.82%. From January to June 2025, China total TFS exports totaled 302,500 tons, a year-on-year increase of 57.05%.
Overall, in June 2025, total exports declined slightly due to the rush for orders in the early stages of the export process. Exports maintained growth in the first half of the year, but growth is expected to slow in the second half of the year.
3.4 From January to June 2025, the output of beverage manufacturers above a designated size nationwide reached 93.089 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.11%. Of this, beverage production in June reached 18.428 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.67%.
3.5 From January to June 2025, dairy product production reached 14.33 million tons, essentially flat year-on-year. Of this, dairy product production in June reached 2.546 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.90%.
3.6 O.R.G: Plans to Invest in Two-Piece Can Production Lines in Thailand and Kazakhstan. According to an O.R.G announcement, the company’s controlling subsidiary, Hangzhou Huaruixin Holding Co., Ltd., has approved the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary, Bena Packaging (Thailand) Co., Ltd., in Thailand to invest in and construct the two-piece can production line project in Thailand, with a total investment of approximately 442 million yuan. A new wholly-owned subsidiary has also been established in Kazakhstan to invest in and construct the two-piece can production line project in Kazakhstan, with a total investment of approximately 647 million yuan. After the company’s newly built production lines reach full capacity, they will give priority to meeting the supporting needs of potential customers in the local beer, energy drinks and carbonated beverages fields, and gradually expand the customer base and market area.
3.7 Analysis of Current Tinplate-Using Industries in China
Tinplate is used in industries such as metal packaging products, with beverage cans accounting for approximately 25%, food cans for approximately 24%, chemical cans for approximately 15%, and miscellaneous cans and gift boxes for approximately 12%. These downstream industries alone account for over half of tinplate consumption. Consequently, the production volume of downstream canned food and beverage industries directly impacts tinplate demand.
3.8 Baowu Steel Group Becomes the World’s Largest Steel Company
The 2025 Fortune Global 500 list shows significant regional differentiation and technological competition in the steel industry. With US$125.1 billion in revenue, China Baowu Steel Group has become the world’s largest steel company. It focuses on high-end plate products and hydrogen metallurgy, and holds the highest credit ratings from the three major international rating agencies.
4. Overview
Currently, Chinese tinplate manufacturers are experiencing relatively stable order intake, with delivery cycles exceeding 50 days. Baosteel’s orders from Europe and Shousteel’s orders from the United States are relatively sufficient. As bellwethers of the Chinese market, these two leading companies are highly motivated to continue raising product prices. Furthermore, due to insufficient steel supply caused by production restrictions and shutdowns in the second half of the year, product prices are expected to continue to rise from current levels in September.
It is expected that the price of tinplate will continue to rise by 200 to 300 RMB/MT in September and continue to increase steadily in the second half of the year.
